Welcome

Thank you for your interest in field-testing outdoor products with Mountain Equipment Research Group. This is a voluntary program with a focus on field testing footwear and we also test a variety of other products which may include packs, hydration systems, camping/hiking equipment, and active/outdoor apparel.

We’re Looking for Volunteer Footwear Testers!

We’re currently seeking new volunteer testers from specific demographics to help us evaluate trail-running and hiking footwear.

Who we’re looking for:

  • Women, shoe size W7, ages 20–34
  • Men, shoe size M9, ages 20–34
  • Located in the Pacific Northwest (Bend, Portland, Seattle), California (Sierra Nevada), Utah (Wasatch area, Southern), or the Southeast (TN, NC, SC, VA, GA)
  • Interested in participating in on-trail test events and/or long-term field testing

If you or someone you know fits this description and would like to get involved, please reach out to us by email at fieldtest@mountainerg.com or use the contact form below. Word of mouth has brought us some of our best testers—thank you for spreading the word!

Product Testing Overview

When we receive a new test product, we invite testers based on their activity and location. Invitations include basic product info (e.g., trail runner, winter boot) and testing goals (e.g., casual wear, muddy hikes, mileage). You’ll also get the test time-frame to help decide if it’s a fit for you.

Test Duration & Expectations
Tests typically last 2–8 weeks. During this time, we ask you to use the product extensively to evaluate fit, performance, and durability. We may request initial impressions early on, followed by a final evaluation survey and photos at the end. Some tests include two feedback phases: performance and durability.

Product Availability
The type and number of products vary by season and year. We primarily test footwear, and may also test hydration products, packs, and clothing.

What We Ask of You as a Volunteer
During the test, we ask that you use the product as outlined and provide honest, timely feedback on your experience, including wear, performance, and any issues. Please track usage, problems, and take photos—these help with your final evaluation.

After the test, continue using the product until it wears out or pass it on to someone who can use it. Please don’t sell or donate it for resale, as test items are pre-production samples. If you prefer, you can return the product to us.

What You Typically Get
In most cases, you can keep and continue using the test product after the test ends. We just ask that you stay in touch and let us know if any issues come up. Occasionally, we may request the product back—if so, we’ll cover shipping and just ask you to drop it off. And don’t worry—there’s always another test around the corner!

Interested?

We greatly appreciate your interest in volunteering to be a part of the Field Test Team. Please contact us for an application, where we can see if you might be a good fit for our program.
